Lesson Plan Information
Subject:
Arts
Category:
General
Grade Level:
PreK - Post-Secondary
Duration:
It took my 1st graders 20 minutes from beginning to end. Any age could do this; even parents and their very young children!!
Description:
Tired of all those annoying CDs that come in the mail?? Well, turn them into handy-dandy bird feeders!
Goals:
1. Put those CDs to good use!
2. Make bird feeders to feed the birds
3. Help the kids feel good about the two above items.
Objectives:
1. Kids will make bird feeders out of CDs that normally would go into the garbage. The kids help the birds in the winter.
Educational Resources:
1. String or yarn
2. Old Cds
3. Cardboard trays that can be recycled when project is finished.
4. Dinner knives (not sharp!)
5. Cream cheese or peanut butter (Watch for allergies!!)
6. Birdseed to feed birds in your area.
Reference Materials:

Activity Plan:
1. Tie thread or yarn through the hole in the center around one of the edges (like hanging an old tire as a swing).
2. Spread peanut butter or cream cheese over one side of the CD. (I used cream cheese as my students are allergic to peanuts.)
3. Press the CD into a tray of bird seed. Press hard to smash in as much bird seed as possible.
4. Repeat with the other side of the CD.
5. Hang the CD/Bird Feeder on a branch.
6. The birds love the bird seed and peanut butter or cream cheese, and the squirrels love to ride the CD!!
Method of Learning:
Hands-on!!
Assessment:
Hang those bird feeders, and watch for the birds (and squirrels!)
